What percentage of people develop mesothelioma?

The development of mesothelioma, a type of cancer that typically occurs in the thin layer of tissue that covers the majority of your internal organs (mesothelium), is primarily linked to exposure to asbestos. The risk of developing mesothelioma is not attributed to a specific percentage of the general population. Instead, it is more closely associated with specific risk factors, particularly prolonged exposure to asbestos.

It’s important to note that the risk of developing mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure varies among individuals. Not everyone exposed to asbestos will develop mesothelioma, and the latency period between exposure and the onset of the disease can be decades.

However, statistical data often shows an increased risk of developing mesothelioma among individuals who have been exposed to asbestos. Occupations such as construction, mining, manufacturing, and other industries where asbestos exposure was prevalent tend to have higher rates of mesothelioma.

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, I don’t have a specific percentage of the population that develops mesothelioma due to various factors affecting individual risk and the absence of a precise estimation at a global or national level. If you or someone you know has concerns about asbestos exposure and mesothelioma, consulting with a healthcare professional or specialist would be advisable for personalized information and guidance.
