What are experimental treatments for mesothelioma?

As of my last knowledge update in January 2022, several experimental treatments were being explored for mesothelioma, a cancer primarily caused by asbestos exposure. These experimental treatments include:

  1. Immunotherapy: This approach involves using drugs that help the body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer cells. Checkpoint inhibitors such as pembrolizumab and nivolumab were being studied in clinical trials for mesothelioma.
  2. Targeted Therapy: Certain genetic mutations in mesothelioma tumors might be targeted using specific drugs. For instance, drugs targeting mutations in genes like BRCA1, BRCA2, and others were under investigation.
  3. Gene Therapy: Researchers were exploring gene therapy to modify and enhance the body’s ability to fight cancer cells. This involved altering genes within the cancer cells or the patient’s immune cells to make them better at recognizing and destroying cancer.
  4. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT): PDT uses special drugs, called photosensitizing agents, which are activated by specific light wavelengths to kill cancer cells. This treatment was being tested in combination with surgery or other therapies for mesothelioma.
  5. Tumor-Treating Fields (TTFields): This therapy involves using electric fields to disrupt cancer cell division. Patients wear a device that delivers these fields to the tumor site.
  6. Clinical Trials: Numerous other experimental treatments and combinations of existing therapies were being evaluated in clinical trials to determine their effectiveness and safety in treating mesothelioma.

It’s essential to note that while these treatments hold promise, they might still be in early stages of development or undergoing clinical trials. Patients interested in experimental treatments should discuss options, eligibility, potential benefits, and risks with their healthcare providers and consider participating in clinical trials under the guidance of experienced medical professionals. Additionally, advancements and new treatments might have emerged since my last update, so it’s recommended to consult current medical sources or specialists for the most recent information.
