Common Symptoms of Epithelioid Mesothelioma

Common Symptoms of Epithelioid Mesothelioma

Epithelioid mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that primarily affects the mesothelial cells lining the lungs, abdomen, or other internal organs. It is most commonly associated with asbestos exposure. The symptoms of epithelioid mesothelioma can be non-specific and may mimic those of other respiratory or abdominal conditions. Common symptoms of epithelioid mesothelioma include:

  1. Respiratory Symptoms (Pleural Mesothelioma):
    • Persistent cough
    • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
    • Chest pain or discomfort
    • Wheezing
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Fatigue
  2. Abdominal Symptoms (Peritoneal Mesothelioma):
    • Abdominal pain or discomfort
    • Swelling or fluid buildup in the abdomen (ascites)
    • Nausea and vomiting
    • Changes in bowel habits
    • Unexplained weight loss
    • Fatigue
  3. Other General Symptoms:
    • Fever or night sweats
    • Muscle weakness
    • Loss of appetite

It’s important to note that these symptoms are not unique to mesothelioma and can be caused by various other medical conditions. Additionally, the latency period between asbestos exposure and the development of mesothelioma can be quite long, often spanning several decades. As a result, individuals who have a history of asbestos exposure and experience any of these symptoms should seek prompt medical evaluation and inform their healthcare provider of their asbestos exposure history.

Diagnosis of mesothelioma typically involves a combination of medical history review, physical examination, imaging studies (such as chest X-rays or CT scans), and tissue biopsy to confirm the presence of cancerous cells. Early diagnosis and intervention can be crucial for improving treatment outcomes in mesothelioma cases. Treatment options may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and targeted therapies, depending on the stage and extent of the cancer at the time of diagnosis.
