How Do Doctors Test for Mesothelioma?

Diagnosing mesothelioma, a type of cancer that primarily affects the lining of the lungs, abdomen, or heart, can be challenging because its symptoms are similar to those of other, more common conditions. Doctors use a combination of methods to test for mesothelioma, including:

  1. Medical History and Physical Examination: The diagnostic process often begins with a detailed medical history and physical examination. The doctor will ask about your exposure to asbestos, which is the primary risk factor for mesothelioma, and any symptoms you may be experiencing.
  2. Imaging Studies:
    • Chest X-ray: A simple chest X-ray can reveal abnormalities in the lungs, which may suggest pleural mesothelioma (mesothelioma affecting the lining of the lungs).
    • CT Scan (Computed Tomography): A CT scan provides more detailed images and can help identify the size and location of tumors.
    • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): MRI can provide detailed images of soft tissues and help in evaluating the extent of the disease.
  3. Biopsies: To definitively diagnose mesothelioma, a biopsy is usually necessary. This involves taking a tissue sample for examination. There are several types of biopsies:
    • Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA): This involves using a thin needle to withdraw a small tissue sample from the affected area.
    • Thoracoscopy or Laparoscopy: These minimally invasive procedures involve the insertion of a thin, flexible tube with a camera into the chest or abdomen to directly visualize and collect tissue samples.
    • Open Surgical Biopsy: In some cases, an open surgical biopsy may be required, which involves a larger incision to access the affected area and obtain tissue samples.
  4. Immunohistochemistry: This is a laboratory technique that uses specific antibodies to identify proteins and markers unique to mesothelioma cells. It can help confirm the diagnosis and determine the subtype of mesothelioma.
  5. Blood Tests: Some blood tests may help diagnose mesothelioma or monitor its progression. These tests may include checking for specific markers like mesothelin, fibulin-3, or other biomarkers associated with the disease.
  6. Pulmonary Function Tests: For pleural mesothelioma, assessing lung function is important. Pulmonary function tests can measure how well the lungs are working and identify any impairment caused by the disease.

Once mesothelioma is diagnosed, further tests and imaging may be performed to determine the stage and extent of the disease. The stage of mesothelioma helps guide treatment decisions. Treatment options for mesothelioma may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and sometimes immunotherapy or targeted therapy, depending on the stage and location of the cancer. It’s important to work closely with a medical team experienced in treating mesothelioma to develop an individualized treatment plan.
